Choosing a Cat Food for Your Cat

For some cat owners, their cats are like their children. These cat owners put a lot of consideration into food, litter, toys, or any other product they bring home to their cats. If you are one of these cat owners, there are several things you should take into account before selecting a food for your cat.

Wet versus dry food: While it’s no secret that most cats love wet food, a diet consisting primarily of dry food may be better for your cat. Wet food will cause more rapid tooth decay, leading to dental problems in later life. Also, wet food can encourage overeating, and obesity in cats can also lead to health problems. Therefore, dry food is the healthy choice for your cat (although you can sneak him or her some canned food as a treat occasionally).

Special blends: There are many special blends of dry food that can meet your cats individual needs. A kitten formula will provide much-needed nutrients and extra calories for healthy growth. An indoor formula will provide your cat with the fiber that outdoor cats have easier access to. Weight control formulas will ensure that less active cats don’t gain unnecessary weight, while hairball control formulas will prevent the buildup of hairballs. Select the special blend that meets your cat’s needs.

Treats and snacks: Cats love special treats, such as milk or tuna. However, feed your cat extra treats conservatively, for a couple of reasons. One, a lot of extra treats can contribute to obesity, which will cause health problems in your cat. Two, some treats – such as milk – are not good for cats’ digestive systems, no matter how much they like them.

Remember, a carefully chosen diet can prolong your cat’s life, ensuring that he or she will remain with you for many years.
