OR: Making Good Scents

You see something great, step nearer to get a closer look and – whew! What’s that SMELL? Whether it’s a room, your car or a favorite outfit, no matter how nice it looks it’s unusable if its stench would give a buzzard a fit of the dry-heaves. Don’t despair; these things are sent to try us, but the situation may still be salvageable.

First of all, fresh air and sunshine will correct a multitude of sins. If you’ve got something that’s musty, clean it off as best you can and let it sit outside for a while. (If it’s Great-Grandpa, remember to bring him back in when it gets dark.)

Kitty litter (the kind that looks like little rocks) absorbs odors, too; try it in old suitcases or the trunk of your car. The cheapest kind usually works the best.

I think everybody knows about keeping an open container of baking soda in the fridge to neutralize odors, but you can also use it in the water when you wash the thing out. Baking soda’s also good in closets, laundry, the dishwasher and your shoes.

For really resistant odors, try closing the article up with a tray containing (uncooked) coffee grounds or charcoal.

Boiling a little vinegar in a lot of water will remove cooking smells like fish or onions, but then the place will smell like vinegar, which isn’t much better. Try putting cinnamon and cloves in the water instead. Speaking of onions, rubbing your hands over steel is supposed to remove the smell from your skin after you’ve chopped them.

Life can be messy, after all; if it’s not one thing, it’s an odor.
