Wet Food is Necessary for Cats
Cats are natural meat eaters, and this is often ignored as we take them into our home. We often have the best intentions of giving them the best dry food. As cat owners, we may buy all natural food and the products with the best quality.
But this still ignores a cat’s need for water and protein. In the natural world, cats hunt and live off small prey. This means that their diet is high in water and in protein. Their prey is 75% water. They are not used to getting their water from a bowl. That is why they are not natural drinkers. If you have noticed, most cats do not like water.
Dry cat food is mostly carbohydrates from grains. Can you imagine a cat in the natural world eating stalks of wheat? Cats have no dietary need for carbohydrates.
This high carbohydrate diet leads to many health issues. It can lead to obesity because their diet weighs them down, and they are not hunting for their food. Their blood sugar tends to rise from all the carbohydrates they are ingesting. This blood sugar irregularity can lead to diabetes. The lack of water in their diet can also lead to kidney disease.
Because cats’ digestive system is designed for high protein and water, wet food is an easy answer to this issue. Make sure to supplement their meals with wet food at least once a day. Mix it into their dry food, so they will not have digestive issues.
Make sure the canned food is all protein and not a mixture of grains and meat. Try and purchase natural canned food to avoid artificial flavors and fillers.
Helping your cat eat as closely to his or her natural dietary habits will make for a healthier and happier cat.
