You will need:
String
A wide-mouthed jar
A white pipe cleaner
Boiling water
Borax (It’s the 20 Mule Team Borax in the laundry section at the store)
A pencil
Cut the pipe cleaner into thirds and twist the pieces together in the middle so that they form a six-stemmed starburst (trim the ends if the points are not even). Tie the string in a circle around the six legs of the starburst, about 2/3 of the way up the stems. Tie a second piece of string around one of the legs at and tie the snowflake to the middle of the pencil. If you lay the pencil across the mouth of the jar, the string should be long enough that the snowflake can hang down to the middle of the jar without touching the bottom. Take the snowflake/ pencil assembly out of the jar and lay it aside.
Fill the jar with boiling water and stir the borax into the water one tablespoon at a time, using 3 tablespoons of borax for every cup of water. Stir until dissolved. Put the pencil back across the mouth of the jar so that the snowflake is suspended in the borax solution.
Let it sit undisturbed overnight and in the morning it will be covered with crystals! Hang your snowflake where you can watch it sparkle.
(This is also a great craft to do with kids, but make sure they know it’s not rock candy!)
