Supporting Your Immune System Through Winter

The stress of the holidays and the cold can leave you feeling down and out physically. This is a great time of the year to instill great habits that can last you a lifetime.

Make sure to get plenty of sleep. Following regular sleep cycles establishes a rhythm for rest, rejuvenation, and healing. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep a day. Some people may require more than this. Gauge the right amount of time for you and adjust your schedule to your needs. When you do not get enough sleep, your immune system weakens and you are more susceptible to colds and viruses.

Drink plenty of water at room temperature. This allows for better absorption and hydration. Avoid drinking water with meals because this interferes with digestion.
Adding a teaspoon of lemon to your water will help support liver functions.

Eat wholesome meals and snacks. This means organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, and lean natural meats. Avoid foods that dehydrate your system like salty, overly sweet, and junk foods. Do not skip meals and do not overeat because both stress the immune system.

Take Vitamin C through supplements or foods like citrus fruits and berries. This will help cell renewal and cleansing. When you system is over taxed, the immune system will falter.

Exercise on a regular basis to increase oxygen intake and circulation. This can be as simple as walking thirty minutes a day or doing stretches to increase flexibility and your heart rate.

Find ways to decrease stress and include these in your everyday routine. You can start the day with journaling or meditation. Cut back on your to do list and realize this time of year requires more down time.

Honor your body’s needs during this season.
